Research topics
JEMES focuses strongly on research. Through intensified cooperation between the academics in JEMES, synergy in research efforts among the participating institutes will be produced, and enhanced options for involvement of students into research at an early stage will be offered.
Manifold specialisation modules contain up-to-date research results, project work based on actual problems from applied and theoretical research.
The fourth semester is devoted exclusively to thesis research (often part of a larger project where a number of PhD students, senior researchers and sometimes private stakeholders collaborate).
The partner universities are all known for their exceptional research performance.
Aalborg Univesitet
Puts emphasis on developing environmental assessment methods as e.g. life cycle assessment and environmental impact assessment as the more natural science part of the programme together with a heavy input on management and governance of environmental problems. To foster application of theoretical insights in practical contexts, problem-based learning (PBL) is used.
Technische Universität Hamburg-Harburg (TUHH)
TUHH is organised in a matrix structure that combines various specialised TUHH institutes in the area of Environmental Engineering which all add in teaching and research to JEMES. TUHH brings in singular expertise in the sustainable ecological sanitation , Bioengineering and treatment technologies for water, liquid and solid waste. Theory, its application in projects, and research are closely intertwined. TUHH's approach also takes into account the specific situations in developing countries.

Universidade de Aveiro
The University of Aveiro’s research is mainly developed within the R&D Unit CESAM (Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies) - http://www.cesam.ua.pt. Based on the long experience of the University of Aveiro in the environmental research area the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Portuguese Government attributed to CESAM the status of Associated Laboratory, which is given to key national research organizations. The JEMES teachers are members of CESAM, developing research in different topics, like Atmospheric Quality, Marine Ecosystems and Modelling, Integrated Watershed Management, Environmental Chemistry.
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
The Institute of Environmental Science and Technology (ICTA) at UAB has now 110 specialists in natural and social sciences. ICTA aims to promote interdisciplinary research and training in the area of environmental sciences and technology. Priority areas of research include: i) Environmental Sociology, ii) Ecological Economics and Integrated Assessment, iii) Conservation Biology and Ethnoecology, iv) Urban Change, Urban Lifestyles and Sustainable Water Consumption v) Climate Change, Oceanography, and Global Change, vi) Industrial Ecology and Environmental Prevention, and vii) Evaluation of Environmental Risks, the interface between Science and Policy.
